Who You Are
You will be based at the Civic Centre, Esher, and work under the guidance of the Housing Standards Manager. Your role primarily focuses on enhancing housing quality across Elmbridge Borough and reducing empty homes. A good standard of general education is essential, alongside qualifications, or the willingness to obtain them, in Environmental Health, Housing or related fields.
What the job involves
Your responsibilities include investigating complaints about housing conditions, inspecting properties, and enforcing compliance with housing legislation. You will liaise with owners and tenants to resolve housing issues and promote the reuse of empty properties. Maintaining the department's records, preparing documentation for legal proceedings, and working collaboratively with internal and external partners are also key aspects of the role.
Skills
- Knowledge of Environmental Health and Housing legislation
- Experience with housing inspections and producing layouts
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and document management systems
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Capable of drafting statutory notices and enforcement papers
- Experience in identifying and reactivating empty properties
- Willingness to work flexibly, including some evenings
- Access to a vehicle and ability to drive for business purposes
